Push-button toilet flush system. Toilet cistern repair - faults and their elimination. Water leakage into the room: causes and methods of troubleshooting

When installing sanitaryware in a new house or recently purchased apartment, you need to worry in advance about the correct installation of the toilet, the tight connection of hoses and pipes, the serviceability of gaskets and fasteners. Old plumbing also occasionally requires a preventive inspection. Due to poor water quality, the fittings quickly wear out and fail, and then urgent repairs of the drain tank are required. Delay costs your home, including your downstairs neighbors, flooding.

What does a cistern consist of?

At first glance, it’s a simple device: a container equipped with a drain and water supply system. When you press the button, the mechanism releases water, the supply valve opens, and the empty container is refilled.

The main functional parts of the tank: 1(1) – inlet (filling) fittings; 1(2) – drain (drain) mechanism; 1(3) – water drain button. All details are interconnected

Do-it-yourself cistern repair

It turns out that even such a basic device can break down. Let's take a closer look at how you can troubleshoot problems without resorting to the help of plumbers.

Troubleshooting the float mechanism

If water constantly fills the tank and immediately flows into the toilet, look for a problem in the float mechanism. There may be several reasons for the breakdown:

  • intake valve wear;
  • misalignment of the lever (“rocker arm”);
  • displacer malfunction.

The float (buoy) from long-term use develops cracks through which water enters it. It sinks and ceases to perform its main function - it simply needs to be replaced.

If the lever is bent, it is necessary to return it to the correct, horizontal position. The location of the lever is approximately 2 cm below the hole through which water enters.

Modern drain fitting kits have a different structure - they do not include a traditional float on a rocker arm, although the principle of operation of the mechanism has been preserved

The float mechanisms installed in the tanks of modern toilets can be divided into piston and membrane. The first ones have the simplest design, in which a piston with a sealing collar is pressed against the valve seat and thus shuts off the water supply. The latter are a relatively newer development - they can be found in the vast majority of modern waste cisterns. Instead of a piston with a gasket, they are equipped with a membrane made of wear-resistant silicone or latex, thanks to which the noise level can be significantly reduced during water collection.

The diaphragm valve of the flush tank, although it has a more complex design, has gained wide popularity due to its high reliability and quiet operation.

It is not difficult to guess that failure of the locking mechanism is most often associated with wear of the sealing gasket in the first case and the membrane in the second. In addition, malfunctions of the float valves may be associated with malfunctions of other parts of the mechanism:

  • control lever axis;
  • saddles;
  • thrust cap.

Although the availability of inlet fittings of any size in the retail chain makes it possible to replace the entire assembly, there is no need to rush into this. A thrifty owner will definitely disassemble the mechanism and, after identifying the cause of the leak, will fix the breakdown using available means. Thus, the sealing gasket can be cut from a piece of genuine leather or thick rubber, the axle can be replaced with a piece of thicker wire or a nail, and the thrust cap can be cut from a suitable sealing material.

How to get rid of noise when filling the tank

The loud noise that accompanies the process of filling the tank with water creates discomfort for others. It is easy to get rid of it by adjusting the diameter of the inlet hole or adding a small plastic tube to the fittings. The water will no longer flow freely and noisily into the tank, but will flow through the tube, and accordingly, the loud sound will disappear. To do this, we put a tube 30-35 cm long with one end over the hole, and place the other below the water level with the tank drained. Even if the noise does not completely disappear, the plumbing will become quieter.

A plastic or rubber tube placed over the inlet hole muffles the noise of water entering the tank. This device is suitable for tanks with top supply

Replacing bolts in case of leakage

Here, most likely, the steel bolts that secure the tank to the toilet shelf have rotted - they need to be urgently replaced. Having purchased a new set of bolts, we proceed to dismantling the tank:

  • turn off the water by turning the valve perpendicularly;
  • dry everything inside and remove any remaining rusty fasteners;
  • unscrew the nut and disconnect the inlet valve;
  • unscrew the old bolts securing the tank to the toilet shelf;
  • remove the tank from the thick rubber cuff;
  • remove the old bolts. Both must be removed, even if only one of them is faulty;
  • we clean the connection points of the bolts with the tank and the tank with the toilet;
  • tighten new bolts;
  • install the tank on the shelf, having previously secured the cuff;
  • tighten the fasteners carefully so as not to damage the sanitaryware;
  • let the water flow and check if it is leaking at the bottom of the tank; We flush the water a couple of times and check again.

Sometimes a leak may appear a little later, so for two days it is worth carefully examining the problem area from time to time. As you can see, it is not always necessary to carry out major repairs - sometimes it is enough to replace the fasteners.

To unscrew the bolts connecting the flush cistern to the toilet shelf, no special tool is needed: usually “ears” are provided for easy gripping

Toilet cistern fasteners are available at every plumbing store. The price of the cheapest one is 40-50 rubles, the more expensive option will cost 250-300 rubles

If the toilet has been in use for a long time, then most likely the bolts connecting the tank and toilet bowl are so rusty that they cannot be unscrewed even with the use of universal penetrating lubricant WD-40. In this case, only a grinder will help, with which you need to carefully cut off the bolts from the underside of the shelf. It is best if someone at home holds the tank at the same time - this way it is guaranteed to remain intact. When looking for replacement fasteners, choose brass hardware. This alloy perfectly resists corrosion, so if the need for disassembly ever arises, you can do it without difficulty.

What to do when water constantly flows

There can be no talk of saving water if it constantly flows in a thin stream into the toilet, not allowing the required volume to accumulate in the container.

Most likely, the problem is in the siphon membrane, which has worn out and lost its ability to seal the hole hermetically. The problem is solved by simply replacing the membrane with a new one.

To do this, you need to perform several steps:

  • drain the water;
  • remove the siphon;
  • remove the old membrane and install a new one;
  • place the siphon in place, attach it to the lever, and screw in the fastening nut.

Sometimes the problem is not the membrane, but a broken rod, which can also be easily replaced.

The siphon membrane is located at the bottom of the drain fittings. It is a rubber gasket that ensures a tight connection of parts

Thanks to my varied hobbies, I write on various topics, but my favorites are engineering, technology and construction.

The constant flow of water from the tank into the toilet is often not associated with any malfunction. A similar thing happens when, for some reason, the overflow regulation is disrupted. If the drain tube is positioned correctly, the water level in the tank will be 20 mm below the plane of its cut. At the same time, the edge of the drain channel must be more than 10 mm from the inlet pipe of the flexible liner.

What to do if the drain tank does not fill

So, suddenly the water completely stopped flowing into the tank. Will it be enough to repair it yourself, or will you have to turn to plumbers? Let's consider three ways to solve this problem.

First, let's check the serviceability of the supply hose. We turn off the water, disconnect the hose from the tank and place it above any container (you can also above the tank). We unscrew the valve a little and let the water flow again. If everything is in order with the hose, water will flow freely into the container. Otherwise you will have to replace it.

It is possible that the connection point of the supply hose is clogged, since after the pipeline is repaired, sand and other mechanical contaminants enter the water and can clog small holes. You can try to clear it with a long, sharp object, such as a screwdriver.

In addition, you should make sure that the coarse filter is clean if a modern shut-off valve with a diaphragm valve is installed in the tank. To do this, you need to disconnect the flexible line and use pliers with thin jaws to remove the filter from the supply pipe. To clean it from dirt, just place the part under a strong stream of water. If the filter is clogged with persistent deposits, then it should be placed in vinegar or a solution of citric acid for several hours, and then cleaned with a brush with stiff bristles.

The cost of a new supply hose is about 100 rubles. It is better to buy a product that has a shut-off valve - if the cistern leaks, it is much easier to turn off the water

If the failure of the float mechanism is due to wear of the intake valve, then it would be advisable to replace the assembly. The time and effort spent on repairs are not worth the couple of hundred rubles that will have to be paid for new fittings. As practice shows, only a few succeed in repairing the locking mechanism - most likely, you are not one of them.

Replacement of fittings

If you don’t want to tinker with small parts of fittings that have become unusable, you can simply remove the old one and install a new mechanism purchased in a store in its place.

When removing old fittings, pay attention to faults. It may not be necessary to completely replace the mechanism; sometimes it is enough to change one small part

Fitting kits for flush tanks have design differences. For example, their structure varies depending on the type of eyeliner - side or bottom

First, let’s figure out how best to disassemble the structure using the example of reinforcement with bottom connections:

  • turn off the water;
  • carefully unscrew the button;
  • remove the cover;
  • disconnect the liner;
  • We remove the drain column in parts: first we dismantle the upper part (rotating 90 degrees);
  • unscrew the fasteners of the drain tank;
  • we place it on the toilet for further work;
  • unscrew two nuts: securing the valve and column, take out the second part of the fittings;
  • we install a new mechanism and carry out reverse work on installing the tank.

As you can see, changing the components of the tank is not difficult: the whole operation takes no more than 10-15 minutes. Another advantage of doing it yourself is that no special tools are required; all actions are carried out using hands, pliers and wrenches.

Any house or apartment these days has plumbing fixtures as integral elements of comfortable living. Separately, it is worth highlighting the drainage tank device with a button. Its high performance properties are achieved thanks to a well-coordinated system of water drainage mechanism. This element is one of the main ones in the functioning of the entire toilet structure; it includes a bowl made of ceramic material with built-in mechanisms for collecting and releasing water.

Today, the construction products market includes a wide variety of flush cisterns; their differences lie in the source material, the working arrangement of the parts, price and quality.

The principle of operation of all such structures is approximately the same, only the mechanism is different, which can be:

  • with one flush button;
  • with a pair of flush buttons;
  • with a device that has two modes.

Relatively recently, a mechanism appeared on sale that included two buttons. This system can reduce water consumption. Using one button, all the liquid flows out from the drain tank; using another button, only a part will drain. The flushing procedure itself also looks different:

  1. Water enters the toilet directly from the flush cistern; here the water moves in one direction.
  2. During flushing, water constantly flows in different directions. This drain is more efficient, but it produces a lot of noise.

In order not to make a mistake in choosing such a device, and in the future to easily carry out assembly and repairs, it is worth knowing its design. The mechanism of operation of flush cisterns is simple: its work begins with collecting the required amount of water and discharging it into the sewer through the toilet.

To some extent, the design resembles a conventional water seal, which includes a seal, levers and a float. By independently pressing the lever or button on the lid, water flows out, while performing the most important tasks - eliminating waste into the sewer.

There are visible structural elements, these are:

  • tank (capacity);
  • lid;
  • buttons.

The invisible part of the structure includes:

  • stub;
  • float valve;
  • drain fittings.

How does the drain mechanism work?

By pressing the release button, the tank system begins to operate. Such a device for drainage equipment is located in connection with its “filling”, located in the container itself. Before the button is pressed, the tank is waiting. It already contains water, which runs up to the set level. Using a special bulb, the liquid is held in the tank. It is made of rubber material, so it always fits quite tightly to the saddle. By pressing the button, a pull is performed, which in turn pushes the bulb away to open the drain. As a result, the seat will not be clogged, liquid will enter the hole in the tank and flow out into the toilet.

After releasing the button located on the tank lid, the bulb does not immediately return to its original position. Otherwise, this would have meant that the drain was short-lived. In the right device, this is the process of slowly lowering the bulb, completely hollow inside. There is only air in it, pushing it out of the saddle.

The lifting force of this component of the system becomes less according to the degree of water collection into the tank. At the end, the pear is completely sucked to the saddle. Installation without a special guide tube would not bring a positive result. The secret here is that various forces act on the rubber shutter, leading it in the direction of minimum resistance. If there was no pipe in the structure, then this rubber element would not be able to return again to the saddle located in the center of the tank.

Toilet cistern systems

The functioning of the cistern occurs due to two systems: water intake and drainage. The first is also called inlet, its operation is quite simple. It allows liquid to pass through and allows the tank to be filled at a time when there is no water in it, and allows it to flow according to the degree of filling of the container. There are quite a few types of valves that work for inlet, but the principle is the same everywhere. Any device has a float that determines the water level. Each system includes a float adjustment operation, with which you can simply adjust the degree to which the tank is filled with water. The service life of the inlet elements depends on the quality of the incoming water, which is why experts recommend installing a filter.

Fittings that work to drain water - this system makes it possible to control. This design can be placed in several positions. Certain types of drainage components make it possible to drain water in two modes: standard and economical. In addition, the outlet parts in the design of the flush tank can perform an emergency drain of water if necessary. If the parts of this system stop working, then all the drain fittings have to be replaced.

The main problems in the operation of the toilet appear due to malfunctions of these two systems. Therefore, to prevent leakage, you need to determine which of them has stopped working by replacing parts or the entire set, and repair the breakdown.

Equipment installation

It is not difficult to buy shut-off valves at any plumbing store, but it would be better to install the branded components included in the kit. Thus, there is a greater likelihood of matching all components.

To install the cistern yourself, you need the following tools:

  • wrenches: adjustable and open-end;
  • bendable hose;
  • screwdriver;
  • plumbing system;
  • gaskets of the required size;
  • fuma made of rubber.

The instructions for installing such equipment include several stages. Initially, you should install the lower part of the drain assembly in the tank, the main thing is to make a tight fit to the outlet hole. Install a rubber gasket between the bottom of the container and the base. Then install the tank on the toilet. A thick rubberized ring should be placed between them. This will prevent surfaces from touching. Using bolts, you should screw the flush and flush structure to the toilet.

If this is a drain tank device with a button with a bottom water supply, then before installing the structure, the elements that will supply the liquid should be correctly installed. In this system, rubber gaskets should be firmly secured. They will help avoid leakage. In a structure placed on top, these elements will not be needed, since they are above the water level. After fixing the tank, you can install such units. The same method is used for these types of installations. A tube is threaded into the hole in the tank and secured on both sides with nuts.

The next step will be to attach a bendable hose to the riser fitting and attach a water tap, allowing, if necessary, to carry out repairs and shut off the flow of water. Typically, hoses have nut-spacer elements in their design, which ensure fastening strength. However, craftsmen most often build in a fuma for greater reliability. After connecting the tank to the water supply system, the float should be adjusted. The liquid level should be 15 cm below the edge of the tank.

At the last stage of installation, you will need to install the mechanism. The top fittings should be placed in the hole of the cover and secured with decorative elements covering the hole.

Methods for installing a toilet cistern

The toilet cistern can be attached in three different ways:

  1. The first method looks like this: the structure is installed directly under the water flow, and you need to combine it into a whole system with a toilet using tank fittings. The scheme may not look very nice, but it is capable of providing good water pressure at the time of its descent.
  2. The second installation method is that here the flush tank is mounted on the toilet itself. In most cases, this is done when you need to replace an old tank that was installed using the first method. The main advantage of this installation option is that the tank and lid are placed in plain sight, and maintenance and repairs can be carried out as simply as possible.
  3. The third method of installing a drain system tank is that the structure will be embedded in the wall. The main disadvantage of this installation scheme is the repair of the wall. The advantages of this method include: complete invisibility of the tank and space saving.

A typical toilet tank and the water drainage mechanism included in its kit are a mandatory accessory of any comfortable home (more precisely, the toilet in it). The toilet flush cistern is most often located directly above the plumbing fixture or is mounted higher along the wall at some distance from it.

The domestic market offers a wide range of drain mechanisms that are quite simple in design. The classic design of a toilet involves the operation of all its elements according to a similar scheme, which allows the use of a unified approach to the routine repair of the inside of the tank.

standard set of internal piping of the tank

The latter is explained by the fact that the principle of operation of the toilet flush for all known models is the same, which provides the possibility of a universal approach to their restoration in the event of a breakdown.

Toilet cistern device

Basic provisions

The flush system with a trigger mechanism is the most important element of this plumbing fixture. It is a container of a given volume with technological holes on it. Two of them are necessary for the input and output of water masses from the flush tank, and the third is used to place the inspection cover.

note: The inlet mechanism has a special toilet flush valve that limits the flow of water into the tank.

When the flush mechanism of the tank operates, water first accumulates in the tank, and after that (by pressing a special built-in button) it is flushed into the toilet bowl.

The most convenient way to understand the structure and principle of operation of the tank is to consider the features of the toilet flush system.

Purely structurally, the drain tank contains the following main components and mechanisms:

  • water supply control device;
  • a special hollow “float” included in its composition;
  • a mechanism for blocking the flow of water into the sewer hole (toilet flush).

Based on the type of material used in the manufacture of the body, known examples of drain systems are divided into ceramic, metal and plastic products. All of these varieties have their advantages and disadvantages. In this case, the issue of choosing a specific sample is decided by each user personally.

Depending on the method of fixation and location, the toilet flush system can have the following designs:

  • a low-mounted device installed directly on its body;
  • high-mounted release tanks, which are hung on the wall or built into it through the use of a special niche.

Note that the design of a toilet flush cistern with a separate arrangement requires the presence of a special channel made in the form of a separate drain pipe. The higher the point where the storage tank is placed above the toilet unit, the stronger the pressure of the water flush it creates.

The only drawback of separate waste tanks is their not very aesthetic appearance. In contrast, devices attached directly to the device body in the interiors of toilet rooms look much better.

Features and types of flush toilets

In anticipation of an emergency (if the toilet is broken, for example), a special overflow mechanism is provided in the design of the drainage system. If the water in the storage tank exceeds a predetermined level, it begins to flow into a special tube and flow directly into the sewer.

The entire toilet flush system works in such a way that, by definition, liquid cannot spill out through the edges of the storage tanks.

Important! When this safety mechanism is triggered, the cold water flow meter readings naturally increase. However, at the same time, the toilet drain system will not overflow, which is guaranteed to avoid flooding of the apartment.

The design of a toilet flush can be horizontal or circular. In the horizontal version, water flows from the flush tank in the classical way (in a continuous stream) through a hole in the bowl.

The second of these approaches involves the formation of a complex shape of a jet flowing in a circle from its contour. The simplest outdated designs use a special rubber bulb (sometimes called a siphon), which prevents the flow of water by sealing the drain hole.

Toilet cistern repair

Any (even very reliable) water flushing mechanism fails over time, which, due to the special importance of this element of plumbing, requires emergency measures.

Repairing a toilet with your own hands requires basic skills in handling plumbing tools, as well as the ability to quickly detect sudden damage.

Before you repair the toilet yourself, carefully read these instructions and watch the video at the end to reinforce the material.

In the event that water does not flow or drain from the storage tank, the cause of the malfunction is most likely the following damage to the toilet tank:

  1. If the automatic water supply mechanism is disrupted, it is necessary to check the needle valve of the valve, through which the flow is shut off. Such a malfunction can lead to an emergency situation that disrupts the normal filling and flushing of the toilet;
  2. in the case when water constantly flows into the sewer channel through the drainage device, you should check the reliability of the fit of the closing “pear” to the sealing collar of the drain hole;
  3. and, finally, if a poor supply to the tank from the water main is detected, you need to check and thoroughly clean the fine water filter.

Note: The diagram of the toilet cistern and the location of its elements is shown in the photo on the right.

general operating principle of toilet fittings

To restore an old-style drain tank, first of all, you should worry about purchasing parts that are rarely available for sale. If a malfunction is detected, you should check the integrity of the float, the “bulb” and the rubber o-ring located on the drain of the toilet flush system.

It is impossible to call an apartment, private house or cottage comfortable if the drainage tank does not work well. There are a huge number of types of this type of plumbing in modern stores. But the structure of the internal mechanisms of a toilet cistern with a button does not have any special differences.

The operating principle is identical. If there are problems with the flow of water into the container, the drain mechanism of the tank is often the cause. We'll tell you how to troubleshoot the problem yourself below.

How does a toilet work?

Toilet cistern device with button not particularly difficult. The insides of the cistern that make up the toilet flush valve are a few basic components:

  • a hole for draining liquid, placed at a certain angle;
  • an overflow tube installed at the side in relation to the drain hole;
  • valve cover with rubber seal;
  • a mechanism that performs the function of filling the tank;
  • drain button.

The device responsible for properly filling the tank with water is the water supply mechanism. It consists of the following elements:

  • device with a float;
  • stop valve.

The operating principle of the float device is as follows. A float is directly attached to the lever mechanism, which is made from metal or plastic. As a result of changes in the filling level of the toilet bowl, the location of the float changes. When the container is filled to its maximum, the device is in the maximum raised position.

It is in this position lever acts on shut-off valves, which do not allow liquid to flow into the container. As soon as the liquid has drained, the float drops to the minimum level and the locking mechanism opens, as a result of which the liquid again begins to flow freely into the tank.

Operating principle of dual-mode drain

New generation models are equipped with a double flush button. According to experts, such a device helps save the amount of water consumed. This is achieved thanks to a two-mode drain mechanism:

  1. The standard type of drain is the complete removal of water from the tank, which according to standards is from 4 to 6 liters.
  2. The half type allows you to split the drain. At one time he can only drain half of the water in the tank. Usually this is 2–3 liters. It is this type that allows you to save water. But in terms of its functionality, it is more capricious in terms of adjustment and repair. This is justified by the fact that its device uses a larger number of parts. As a result, the likelihood of failure increases.

There is another option for a dual-mode mechanics device. The difference is that there is no flush button for the toilet, and the degree of flush depends on the degree to which you press the lever. If you press the lever lightly, the water begins to drain, and as soon as you release it, the mechanism closes again. To completely drain the tank, you need to press the lever firmly and all the way.

Adjusting the amount of water in the tank

In drainage containers, you can regulate the volume of liquid filling the tank. This function is performed by a knitting needle, at the end of which a float is attached. By changing its length, you can change the amount of water. In many models of flush tanks, the role of a lever is played by a brass wire. Changing its length is not difficult. If you bend it so that the float is higher, the amount of water will increase. Reducing the level of the float position will correspondingly reduce the degree of filling of the container.

In many versions, brass levers are replaced with plastic ones. In this case, it will not be possible to bend it and change the float level in this way. A device such as a pin placed along the axis of the lever is provided here. By moving it in one direction or the other, the lever arm is changed. The farther the float mechanism is located from the side of the toilet, the more water will flow into the container.

In those models that provide a lower water supply, the shoulder is placed vertically. In this case, adjustment is quite easy.

The float mechanism moves up or down, then fixed with a specially designed clamping device. But still there are some inconveniences. To make adjustments you have to remove the reservoir cap.

This procedure is complicated by the fact that a drain button is attached to the lid, which is directly connected to the drain mechanism. When disassembling, work must be done very carefully so as not to damage the entire system.

The fact that it is mainly consists of parts made of plastic. But the consolation is that both the entire mechanism and its individual parts are freely available in stores.

Important! Repair of the drain mechanism mainly depends on the type of breakdown. In some cases, it is possible to replace only a part, while in others it is easier to completely replace the fittings.

Design and installation of the drain mechanism

The corresponding mechanism is responsible for supplying liquid from the drainage section to the toilet bowl. Consists of the following devices:

  • drain siphon;
  • handle that controls the release lever.

The siphon fits tightly to the drain hole, which does not allow water to pass through unnecessarily. This device is divided into several types:

  • Simplified. It is a cylindrical device made of dense rubber, commonly called a pear. The mechanism for lifting the pear is most often a lever, the location of which is determined on the side of the tank. In other cases - a handle located on the lid. To activate it, you need to lift the handle up.
  • The button responsible for draining the liquid is installed in models that are developed using new technologies. Placed on the product panel located in the foreground. Most often found on products mounted directly into the wall.

After completing the installation work in the bathroom, they begin to install the flush tank, or rather, to assemble the internal system.

How to assemble the tank? To perform this procedure, you must follow the following instructions:

  1. A rubber gasket is installed on the drain mechanism.
  2. Place the mechanism directly into the container and screw it with a plastic nut.
  3. On fasteners washers made of plastic or metal are put on. This already depends on how the product is equipped. Don't forget about rubber gaskets. Then the bolts are inserted into the holes, and the nuts are mounted on the back side, having previously installed.
  4. Rubberized rings are put on the plastic nut for sealing. In the case when a new element is used, there is no need to carry out sealing measures. Otherwise, it is necessary to carefully treat all connections with sealant.

Advice! need to be carefully inspect all parts to identify defects. If there are any at the joints, then they must be treated with sealant. The O-ring is also sealed. The assembly diagram included with each plumbing product will be of great help.

Possible faults

In the case when the installation of the fittings has been completed and put into operation, it is necessary to monitor their serviceability. After some time, some malfunctions may arise that can be easily eliminated yourself. Let's look at the problems that arose with the water supply.

The most common breakdown is that water does not enter the tank or, conversely, its supply does not stop. The cause of such breakdowns is valve responsible for supplying liquid, or directly the float. Floats are designed in the form of hollow cylinders or inverted glasses.

Floats of the first type cannot be repaired; they should be completely replaced. Sometimes you have to replace the entire valve. If we talk about a float in the form of an inverted glass, then the cause of the problem may be the formation of dirt and other deposits in it. The solution to the problem is to clean the float of deposited contaminants.

In the case when everything is fine with the float, but water still does not stop flowing, the cause of the breakdown may be a worn valve membrane. Most often, spare parts are included. Otherwise, the part is purchased and replaced. To do this, you need to remove the cap from the valve, and the worn membrane is removed. A new part is installed in its place. Then it is closed with a cap again. Don’t forget to clean the hole through which water enters the tank.

It happens that water begins to flow out through the overflow. In this case, again pay attention to the float and adjust it. If this doesn't help, then start checking the studs. If damaged, it must be replaced with a new one or simply with copper wire.

Important! If several breakdowns occur, you should carefully examine the fittings, identify the worn part and replace it. Very often it is necessary to completely change the mechanism if several parts are worn out.

As you can see, the toilet structure is not complicated. The design of the tank includes two working mechanisms. The first is for supplying and monitoring the level of liquid in the flush tank, and the second is for draining water into the toilet bowl.

Useful video: installation of a toilet flush mechanism

Today there are several types of models, but the principle of operation is largely similar. Masters note that in all existing types it is absolutely easy to install, adjust and repair yourself: even a child can understand how the toilet works. Many problems can be solved on the spot yourself and without waiting for a plumber. But if we are talking about a modern set that is built into the wall, then in this case it is better to turn to experienced craftsmen.

The most common problem in bathrooms is faulty toilet tanks. Buttons sticking, slow filling of the storage tank, continuous leakage of water from an overfilled tank. There are all kinds of malfunctions.

These situations can arise for a variety of reasons. To reveal the true cause in each individual case, it is necessary to dismantle the cover. After determining the nature of the malfunction, you can perform a simple repair of a toilet tank with a button yourself, without turning to the help of plumbers.

We unscrew the drain button by hand, rotating it counterclockwise. No tools are required for this operation. Pull out the button and carefully remove the cover.

The push-button flush mechanism in the toilet tank is located in the lid. In addition to the main function, it serves as an element for fixing the stable position of the lid

Inside the drain tank there are two mechanisms, the parts of which may have a malfunction that causes a leak:

  • drain mechanism;
  • a shut-off valve responsible for the flow of water from the water supply into the container.

We carefully inspect the drain mechanism, assessing the height of the water level. If the water is in the overflow area, this indicates that the shut-off device is not holding.

The water in it is above the float, and therefore reaches the drain channel, through which it flows into the sewer system.

If the water level is at the adjusted height in the shut-off device, then the leak is due to a malfunction of the valve in the drain mechanism. These are the two main reasons.

Repair of the drain lock mechanism

The water passes above the overflow device, which means that the drain valve is in working order, and the problem lies in the locking mechanism. We drain, emptying the container of water. Close the water supply valve to the system. We remove the drain mechanism device by turning it slightly counterclockwise. We take the removed part out of the container and inspect the condition of the rubber sealing ring, which is the shut-off valve of the drain mechanism. We make sure of its integrity. Set aside.

If this is not the case, then remove the ring and rearrange it with the reverse side, thereby ensuring a tight fit of the rubber to the surface of the bottom of the container. You can immediately install a new O-ring purchased from a plumbing store.

The second problem: the formation of plaque, the accumulation of mucus on the surface of the shut-off valve, which violates the tightness of this system. It can be eliminated by cleaning the part from deposits. Rearranging the ring is very easy. Remove the plastic lock washer. Take the rubber part, wash it thoroughly, then turn it upside down and press it with a washer installed in its original place.

We unscrew the water supply system and the locking mechanism. There are tanks with bottom water supply and top water supply, located in the side wall of the container. The inlet hose is connected and the valve is located on top. The type of connection does not play an important role, since the malfunction is directly related to the condition of the shut-off valve. Grains of sand and rust from the water supply system can get under the valve, which disrupts the seal of the locking ring.

In addition, the valve itself may become deformed during long-term operation. A manifestation of this is a specific recess formed on the sealing rubber. A part with such damage can no longer contain the flow of water from the water supply system.

A type of torn valve rubber that will have to be replaced with a new part, purchased in a store or made with your own hands from suitable materials

  • Let's remove the mechanism that controls the flow of water into the container. To do this, unscrew the large nut by rotating it counterclockwise.
  • We remove the removed device from the tank, temporarily putting it aside.
  • We are considering a membrane that serves to reduce the pressure of water coming from the system.
  • We wash the sealing ring removed together with the membrane from the inlet pipe.
  • Next, we proceed to disassemble the shut-off valve body, which was put aside for a while.
  • First of all, we snap off the float and remove it.
  • Then we remove the float body itself, moving the tongue that fixes the position of the part in the tank to the side.
  • Then we disassemble the location of the valve installation. To do this, take a screwdriver, pry it out on both sides, removing the valve with a “toward” motion.
  • We examine the socket from which the valve was pulled out, and we see a small hole, which it should close tightly when the tank is full of water.
  • The deformed valve looks like a miniature rubber band, in the center of which a recess is squeezed out, the size corresponding to the size of the hole that allows water to pass into the tank.
  • During the first repair, this rubber valve is turned over to the other side, which is smooth and even.
  • When performing repeated repairs, this rubber valve is cut with a sharp stationery knife exactly in the middle. First, the first deformed part is placed in the nest, and then the second - with the smooth cut side up. Thus, one valve can be used three times, each time turning the parts with a flat surface towards the hole through which the tank is filled with water.
  • You can strengthen the valve with an additional part cut from dense foam.
  • We install the valve back into place in the socket, securing it in position by pressing until it snaps into place.
  • We assemble all the parts in the reverse order: body, float, installation on the pipe, securing the device with a swivel nut.
  • When the valve is raised, it should extend the float 1 cm above the housing in which it is located. It is in this position that you need to fix the position of the float by snapping the locking mechanism.
  • We install the second part that covers the drain hole in the tank. With a sharp clockwise movement we fix it in its place. A characteristic click should sound.

Open the tap and start the water supply system. We monitor the process of filling the tank, paying attention to the moment the shut-off valve, which has been repaired, operates. As soon as the water overflowed into the float body and raised it by 1 cm, the water supply to the tank stopped. We put the lid in place and fix it with the water release button, screwing it along the threads of the drainage device until it stops in a clockwise direction. Let's see the results of the repair work. There is no uncontrolled flow of water from the flush tank in the toilet. The water meter froze, confirming that no water was being drawn from the system. We will perform a control drain to once again verify the positive result of the repair. The problem was fixed by hand. Money is saved because there is no need to purchase a new drain mechanism and shut-off valve.

Fixing a leak between the toilet tank and bowl

If, during flushing, streams of water appear from under the tank, this indicates depressurization of the drain hole. The gasket, which can be round or of another shape, depending on the model, is responsible for the tightness of the connection of the parts of the entire structure. The situation with water leakage can only be corrected by replacing the seal. Before going to the store, you need to remove the drain tank and take out the rubber seal. It is better to show the removed part to the sellers, who will help you choose a good replacement.

Sometimes it is better not to buy exactly the same seal, as it will fail again after a while. Manufacturers produce consumable parts from the latest materials, the quality of which is superior to previous products. These are the rubber seals that are worth taking. Having installed the purchased consumables in place of the old gasket, install the tank in the reverse order of disassembly. We have already discussed above how to install the drain mechanism and inlet valve, as well as how to secure the tank to the toilet bowl.

Slowly filling the tank with water

The low rate of water flow into the toilet tank is due to clogged filters. We carry out repair work in the following order:

  • by turning the tap handle, turn off the water flowing into the toilet from the cold water supply system;
  • unscrew the flexible line from the water supply valve to the toilet, located either below or on the side, depending on the model of the plumbing product;
  • in a clogged hose, remove the blockage and check the water pressure in the water supply by lowering the end of the flexible line into the toilet, if it is long enough;
  • otherwise, we use a five-liter plastic bottle or canister to drain the water;
  • turn on the tap, if the pressure is good, then we proceed to clean the water supply valve from accumulated debris;
  • this part is not available in all toilet models, but if it is, it needs cleaning;
  • pull the filter out of the valve using pliers, grabbing the part by the small pin;
  • We wash the removed grill in the sink under running clean water to remove clogged solid particles and accumulated mucus;
  • then we put the washed filter in place, turn on the water and see if the problem is resolved or not.

If the problem is not resolved after washing the filter and flexible hose, then we wash the entire water supply valve by removing it from the tank, after first removing the toilet lid.

After all the described actions, the problem is usually solved. The algorithm for repairing a toilet cistern with a button in case of slow filling with water is clearly shown in the video.

Replacing cistern fittings

In the old toilet cistern, we dismantle the old fittings that have become unusable and install a new water supply and drainage system. We purchase universal fittings suitable for all toilet flush tanks. To use water economically, we buy a two-button drain mechanism that allows you to change the volume of drainage depending on the type of human waste being flushed away.

In such fittings the manufacturer uses:

  • dual-mode push-button mechanism;
  • manual adjustment of the volume of small and large water discharge;
  • drain mechanism stand adjustable to the height of the tank;
  • changing the thrust by reinstalling the lever in one of the existing holes;
  • clamping nut with rubber gasket;
  • valve that closes the drain hole in the toilet bowl.

A mechanism for economical drainage of water from the tank, carried out using two keys, which are activated by a blue or white pin when one of the buttons is pressed

We will replace old fittings. To do this, unscrew the button holding the toilet lid and pull it out of its socket. Let's remove the cover. Let's shut off the water supply to the tank. Disconnect the flexible hose. Unscrew the screws holding the flush tank to the toilet bowl. Remove the tank and place it on the folding seat cover. Remove the rubber sealing gasket, and then unscrew the plastic clamping nut by hand. Then we remove the old drain mechanism.

Next, we install a new drain mechanism, having first removed the rubber seal from it and unscrewed the clamping fastening nut. After installing the drain mechanism into the hole in the tank, we fix its position with the removed parts. When installing the tank on the toilet, do not forget about the sealing ring placed on top of the plastic nut. Then we insert the tank pins into special holes in the bowl, screwing wing nuts onto them from below. We tighten the fasteners evenly on both sides, avoiding distortion of the installed part. If necessary, we replace fasteners with new parts with sealing gaskets.

Using two fasteners, the tank is securely attached to the toilet. At the bottom of the bowl, wing nuts are screwed onto the screws, and thin gaskets are first put on

When connecting the water hose to the side inlet valve, hold the part inside the tank from turning. Tighten the nut with a special wrench or pliers. Install the tank cap and tighten the button. If necessary, adjust the stand and move the lever.

The two-key button has two pins that activate the desired drain mechanism. The length of the pins reaches 10 cm. They are shortened to the required length depending on the height of the tank. Screw it into the button. Insert it into the lid and secure the position of the button from the inside with a nut. Install the lid on the tank. Turn on the water supply. Press the small part of the button, about 2 liters of water are drained. Press most of the button, about six liters of water are drained.

A button gets stuck or stuck: what to do?

To the listed malfunctions of the flush tank, you can add sticking or sticking of the button. This is when you press the button, release it, and it remains in the socket, so the draining does not stop. You have to press the button mechanism several times to return the button to its original position. The problem is solved by cleaning the buttons themselves from rust and dirt. Monthly use of cleaning products to maintain the sanitary condition of the buttons allows you to get rid of this problem once and for all. Some people simply pour a small amount of detergent directly into the push-button mechanism. Under the influence of special means, all dirt dissolves and the buttons do not stick.

A sinking toilet cistern button results in high water consumption, which is prohibitively expensive for the family budget.

As you can see, it is quite possible to independently repair a toilet cistern with a button. By spending a little time studying the structure and operating principle of the valve mechanisms, you can repair the cistern without outside help. Of course, if plumbing work does not bring you any pleasure, then you should turn to professional craftsmen who will cope with any malfunction of the tank and toilet in a matter of minutes. Real professionals only need to take one look at the toilet to understand the nature of the problem. To troubleshoot a problem, plumbers usually always have everything they need with them.
