DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF THE TABLETOP CNC MILLING ENGRAVING MACHINE MAGIC 70

A distinctive feature of Magic machines is the ability to engrave on curved surfaces. This feature will be indispensable when applying engraving to parts obtained by casting or stamping, for example, in the case of industrial engraving or the manufacture of souvenirs. There are two options for engraving on uneven surfaces.

Watch video: Milling a ring with a depth stop

Engraving with depth regulator. In cases where it is necessary to ensure the engraving depth on an uneven part, for example, when applying markings to parts and panels for subsequent grouting, using a depth regulator would be an excellent solution. In this mode, a special ring around the tool moves along the surface of the material, and the engraver is set to a fixed height, which allows you to maintain the required engraving depth on all surfaces of the part.

When operating in both modes, the spindle assembly of the machine is moved to a floating position, which allows you to monitor the curvature of the part, and the spring compression force set from the software will allow you to select the operating mode that provides the required processing quality.

There is now the possibility of diamond circular cutting and engraving on rings

Video: How to apply circular knurling to rings Machine Magic 70 and Magic 50

Engraving with a diamond engraver - a special tool in the tip of which a technical diamond is installed - works without spindle rotation and allows you to “scratch” images on the surface of the workpiece. This method is ideal for creating souvenirs, because allows you to obtain excellent engraving quality on shiny surfaces, including stainless steel.

The MAGIC 70 CNC milling and engraving machine is equipped with a laser pointer, which allows you to check the processing area of the product and, if necessary, move this area to the desired position.

The presented video clearly shows the use of a laser designator when imprinting an inscription into a coin

The MAGIC 70 milling and engraving machine is capable of producing personalized pendants and working with micro-mills. For this purpose, the machine is equipped with an automatic probe that measures the height of the workpiece without touching the workpiece with the thinnest micro-mill.

Engraving on watches with a convex.

The MAGIC 70 CNC milling engraving machine itself calculates the inclination of a flat workpiece and makes adjustments to the control program. Engraving takes place taking into account the inclination.

All MAGIC machines are designed with long-term performance in mind. The MAGIC 70 engraving machine is manufactured and assembled in South Korea with strict quality control at all stages of production.

To ensure high quality engraving, especially when working with small tools, the spindle design was revised compared to the previous generation of this machine. The MAGIC 70 engraving machine is specially designed for use in jewelry production and precision instrument making, but can also be used for engraving souvenirs and circulation products.

Benchtop CNC milling machines are a worthy alternative to their large factory counterparts. In terms of functionality and precision of processing of products, they are not inferior, and due to their smaller weight and dimensions they can be used not only in any small-scale production, but even at home.

1

It is actually a smaller copy. The desktop unit is designed to perform the same types of operations in the manufacture of products of complex shapes: milling, drilling, boring, countersinking, and so on. And the principle of its operation is the same, but unlike large machines, it can only process workpieces of much smaller sizes. But desktop CNC milling equipment can be used as an engraving machine. Large industrial units cannot cope with such work.

Dimensions of desktop CNC milling equipment are no more than 910x880x880 mm. But for some models the table length can exceed 1 m (usually 1135 or 1150 mm). The weight of the machines ranges from several tens to 200 kg. They are powered from a 220 V network. The maximum height of the workpiece (working area) of desktop CNC machines varies from 40 to 200 mm, and the spindle power is in the range of 0.7–1.5 kW.

There are two types of such machines. Console ones have a general appearance, design and operating principle similar to those available.

For portal ones, the spindle is mounted on a transverse beam between two vertical posts, which can be stationary or move along the Y axis. Accordingly, the work table, together with the workpiece fixed on it, either moves along the Y axis or is stationary. The spindle moves not only vertically (Z axis), but also along the X axis - along the beam between the posts.

Spindle of Gantry Table CNC Machine

The equipment is controlled from a personal computer connected via a USB port with the Windows operating system using special software and/or using the DSP controller of the machine (depending on the configuration of the CNC unit). The program can be loaded from external memory media, and the computer is disconnected while the machine is running (also depends on its model). Using the software, you can control workpiece processing manually via DSP or create a program that fully automates all operations.

All machines allow 2D and 3D processing, and some equipment even 4D and 5D. Types of processed materials: from plastic and wood to non-ferrous metals, stone and steel. These capabilities of the machine depend on its purpose and model. Many units are equipped, and others can be optionally equipped with a chip ejector, a spindle cooling system, a rotary device used during the processing of conical products, and other auxiliary units.

In the description of machines you may find the abbreviation CNC - this is the English designation for CNC equipment.

The machines are used in dental laboratories, as well as research and educational institutes, high-precision production of any workshops, including jewelry. They are used for milling, drilling, polishing, grinding, and engraving work at home in the manufacture of small products. The machines produce or process parts of furniture, interior design, advertising media, and so on; stamps, seals, souvenirs and jewelry, radio circuit boards, etc.

2

Desktop CNC milling equipment is used not only by individuals who love and know how to do something with the help of machines, small workshops and workshops, small industries, but even in large enterprises. On the latter, they mainly prefer to install units designed for metal processing. Such a wide range of applications of desktop CNC milling equipment is due to its main advantages:

  • relative ease of operation;
  • light weight and compactness;
  • mobility;
  • simpler design and maintenance compared to large machines;
  • connection to a 220 V power supply;
  • relatively low cost;
  • low power consumption;
  • the noise level is within acceptable values and most often significantly lower than them;
  • much higher productivity compared to manual control equipment;
  • reducing the need of enterprises for qualified milling operators;
  • minimum time for transition to processing or manufacturing of new or different types of parts.

For large enterprises, the point of using desktop equipment is that for the manufacture of small parts it is not necessary to use large, and therefore more energy-consuming, machines. In addition, they are not worth it without work, and buying additional ones is very expensive. In addition, not every large machine can handle the fine milling work that a desktop unit is designed for.

Benchtop unit for fine milling

The peculiarity of operating CNC equipment is that you do not have to be a qualified milling machine operator to operate it. The operator operating such a machine only needs to properly secure the workpiece, and then load and run a program in which the unit will perform all the necessary operations without human intervention. It would seem that everything is very simple. It’s just that writing a program for CNC milling equipment requires special qualifications. We need a specialist who knows how to use the CAD/CAM system for such a machine. It includes:

  • directly CNC with its software (command system);
  • a computer used to control the machine via CNC and write a program for it, and the necessary software on it.

That is, an untrained person who bought a desktop CNC milling or milling-engraving unit will have to learn how to use it and the necessary software, with which they will need to:

  • draw drawings,
  • create three-dimensional (3D) models of products,
  • write programs for a CNC machine based on the created drawings and models.

In addition to solving these problems, when operating CNC equipment, it is also necessary to monitor the correctness of its operation.

3

Externally, CNC milling and engraving desktop equipment may not differ at all from simply milling equipment. It depends on the models and designs of machines of both types. And the scope of application of milling and engraving units is the same as described for milling units above. And the latter, as noted earlier, can also be used for engraving work. What is their difference?

Milling machines are more focused on performing this particular type of work, and with an engraving attachment they are more geared towards engraving.

Tabletop CNC milling and engraving equipment

Milling equipment can process steel, but engraving equipment cannot, only non-ferrous metals and not very hard materials. But it can be used to perform any delicate, literally jewelry work. You can’t do this with milling equipment. Only on an engraving machine can you always obtain a product that is functionally complete in all respects and does not require additional processing or finishing. In milling, this depends on the level of processing accuracy required and feasible on the equipment.

In order for the engraving unit to perform its high-precision work quickly, safely and without defects, its technical equipment must include a product height sensor. It not only speeds up processing, but also prevents damage to the engraver or micro-mill. In addition, the engraving machine can be equipped with sensors: curvature (tilt) of the product, measuring the length and reach of the tool. They additionally ensure precision machining and cutting depth.

4

All desktop CNC machines have a limitation on the maximum dimensions of the workpieces processed. It is structurally incorporated into the device of the milling equipment and is determined by the dimensions of the processing area along the X and Y axes, as well as the height and stroke of the spindle along Z. But this limitation does not apply to the German desktop units BZT of the PF series.

German tabletop unit BZT PF series

These CNC machines can process workpieces with dimensions exceeding the values of the spindle movement parameters along the X, Y and Z axes. To do this, it is enough to remove the work table of the BZT-PF metal equipment, on which the milled product should be mounted. This mode of operation in these machines is provided structurally and programmatically. After this, you can process the workpieces:

  1. Much greater height than provided with the desktop not removed. In this case, the machine must be installed on additional supports that will raise it relative to the workpiece being processed, fixed, for example, in a rotary chuck or a bench vice.
  2. With any surface sizes. That is, the restriction on the length of processing along the X and Y axes is completely removed. In this case, the machine is placed directly on the workpiece itself, and then moved along it. Before starting work, the milled surface is programmatically divided into fragments (sections), along which the CNC unit is moved sequentially as the product is processed.

Another additional feature, which is not provided on all desktop CNC milling units, is monitoring possible failures and correcting the operation of the machine when they occur directly during the processing of the product, which allows you to prevent defects and significantly increase productivity. This function is performed by special servo controllers. Currently, only some high-precision machines with stepper motors, usually milling and engraving machines, are equipped with them.

5 Equipment-constructor - assemble the desired machine yourself

Another advantage of desktop CNC milling equipment is the ability to purchase the machine as a construction kit. Such a unit will cost much less than a ready-made one. In addition, when you purchase a construction kit, you will be able to select the required configuration. That is, you will only need to pay for those milling equipment options that you will use. And if you need to expand the capabilities of the machine, this can be easily done at any time by purchasing the necessary modules and parts.

Kits for assembling desktop CNC milling equipment are deservedly in fairly high demand. And the point here is not mainly the lower price compared to ready-made machines. It is important that in this case, a self-assembled unit, as a rule (depending on the model of the construction kit and its manufacturer), is not inferior in terms of its properties and quality of product processing to similar ready-made factory equipment. It is covered by the same warranty period for maintenance and technical support throughout its lifetime.

It usually takes about 3-4 hours to assemble a benchtop CNC router yourself. The attached instructions with photographs and detailed explanations eliminate the possibility of getting confused when constructing or setting up the machine, or getting confused in its incomprehensible elements or complex diagrams.

CNC milling machines are convenient, practical and compact equipment. It has a low cost and at the same time is distinguished by functionality and versatility. This is what explains such a high demand for equipment in medium and small businesses. CNC woodworking machines are great for making small parts and also allow for mass production. Engraving and milling machines can also apply any text or image on top of products.

Depending on the size, CNC milling machines are divided into two types:

  1. Stationary. Such large equipment is installed in spacious production premises. Its key features: high performance, long service life and low maintenance. These CNC routers are used for the active production of goods from plastic, wood and metal.
  2. Tabletop. The equipment is small in size and can be used to perform various works on metal and other materials. The key feature of this type of CNC router is ease of installation. All necessary fasteners are included in the kit.

The presented machines can be purchased for making products from wood, metal and other materials, applying engravings and pictures on workpieces. In this case, the image and text are applied in 2D and 3D format. The acquisition of such a machine will significantly expand the range of products, as well as significantly increase labor productivity. In addition, purchasing CNC routers is an opportunity to open a new direction in business.

Advantages of CNC milling machines

Key advantages of CNC milling machines presented on the website:

  • compactness. The devices have optimal weight and size characteristics for their class, which simplifies the installation and transportation process. Such equipment is the best option for small industries;
  • multifunctionality. The machines are excellent for processing workpieces made of plastic, metal or wood. With their help, you can engrave on a surface of any thickness;
  • profitable price. Such machines can be purchased not only for business, but also for your own hobby.

Equipment

Mini milling machines, which are equipped with program control (CNC), are widely popular among manufacturers involved in the manufacture of certain components for various mechanisms and certain components installed on vehicles.

CNC milling machines. Tabletop and small-sized.

Even in the recent past, on small-sized machines, all processing of metal parts was done manually. A little later, machines appeared, where most of the operations were already performed automatically. But nowadays, mini-machines equipped with program control have become increasingly common and automatically perform almost all metal processing work.

The workpiece is rigidly fixed on the deck of the machine's work table, then a certain program is entered, after which the machine performs almost all milling operations, maintaining all the specified parameters for processing parts.

Milling machines that process metal products are produced in two types:

  • With console
  • Not having a console.

The most popular of them are console machines. The convenience of using such a machine lies in the location of the workpiece being processed, which is rigidly fixed on the console, and all operations to move it along the cutter are performed by the console. In this case, the spindle with the attached cutter remains motionless.

On machines that do not have a console, the workpiece is attached to a work table, which can move both along the machine and across it. In this case, the cutter is also in motion along the horizontal or vertical axis.

Certain information is pre-entered into the machine’s memory, according to which the program control carries out almost all technological processes for milling workpieces. To carry out certain metal milling operations, especially for such small-sized machines, several software programs have been developed.

Providing local type.

Intended for a group of machines performing drilling and boring operations. In this case, only certain coordinate points that must be processed are entered into the machine’s program memory.

Providing contour type.

Used for milling and grinding machines. Information about the trajectory of the cutter when processing a part is stored in memory.

Providing a combined type.

This software is used in multi-tasking machines, which are of the turning-milling type. This software combines the programs of the two previous types of software.

Providing multi-circuit type.

This software is a rather complex program control, as it can perform almost all the processing functions of metal parts that are inherent in small-sized milling machines. This CNC program is used to control machines that belong to the wide-format type.

Advantages of milling machines.

If you compare automated drilling and milling installations and small-sized milling machines with program control, it will immediately become clear that the latter have a number of positive advantages:

  • Small dimensions.
  • Low cost.
  • Creates little noise.
  • Minimal vibration during operation.
  • Simplicity of design.
  • Versatility.

Such machines provide high precision when processing parts with a rather complex geometric shape. At the same time, the processing process occurs quite quickly and efficiently.

The process of operation of a machine equipped with a CNC is monitored by only one operator, who launches the computer program. That is, it is possible to operate several machines simultaneously, under the control of one person.

If at one time equipment equipped with CNC was used only for industrial purposes, now it is actively used in the processing of metal parts and workpieces from other materials in private workshops.

It is quite possible to make a desktop milling machine with PU on your own directly in a garage. There are quite a few such home craftsmen, and a CNC milling machine is quite expensive compared to conventional equipment.

A type of small-sized milling machines.

Mini-milling machines equipped with a CNC system can be sorted as follows:

  1. Equipment for working with metal workpieces.
  2. Wood processing equipment.
  3. Machines for milling and grinding work.

According to the complexity of the equipment, small-sized milling machines are divided into the following categories:

  • Machines that perform purely milling work.
  • Milling and grinding machines.
  • Universal.
  • Milling and turning.
  • Milling and drilling.
Mini-milling machines can be successfully used not only for processing metal workpieces, but also wood, stone, plastic and ceramics.
