The union of wood and metal: the elegance of a combined staircase. They are made like a self-leveling floor. Types of interfloor stairs and the advantages of metal structures

The basis of any staircase construction is its functionality and aesthetics. The practical component is paramount. But appearance also plays a significant role.

The material from which the structure is made affects both its technical parameters and design. Consider the questions of which staircase is better: metal or wood, what is affected by the use of each of these materials, and where it is better to use such a structure.

Types of stairs

According to their purpose, all stairs can be divided into:

  • Input;
  • Interfloor;
  • Checkpoints;
  • Workers.

By location, they can be external or internal, by functionality:

  • Stationary;
  • Portable;
  • Transformable.

Ladders differ in material of manufacture:

  • Concrete;
  • Of natural stone;
  • Brick;
  • Wooden;
  • Metallic;
  • Glass;
  • Combined.

Type:

  • Screw;
  • Marching;
  • Combined.

Marching stairs are the most common use.

They are easy to manufacture and can be:

  • Single-march;
  • Two-marching;
  • Multi-march.

Screws are more suitable when you need to save space in the room.

Combined options are often chosen for individual projects.

Stair constructions

Structurally, the staircase consists of:

  • Carrying system;
  • Steps;
  • Fencing.

The following can act as a bearing element:

  • Kosoura;
  • Bowstrings;
  • Boltsy;
  • Racks.

Kosoura are solid supporting beams, the steps are attached to them from above. On kosoura, marching wooden stairs are most often made.

The bowstrings have special grooves on the inner side where steps are inserted.

Bolts can serve as fastening steps to the wall, and also fasten them together.

The center pillars usually have spiral staircases.

Metal supports are most suitable for spiral and curved staircases.

Stair railings consist of:

  • Railings or handrails;
  • Supporting and intermediate posts or balusters;
  • Decorative items.

Each of the elements of the staircase has its own requirements. In addition, the entire staircase structure must also meet a number of conditions.

Basic requirements for the material of the stairs

The main requirements that the material of the staircase must meet:

  • Strength;
  • Moisture resistance;
  • Durability;
  • Chemical resistance;
  • Resistance to weathering;
  • Fire safety;
  • Ease of installation;
  • Ecological cleanliness;
  • Ease of use;
  • Easy to care for;
  • Aesthetic appeal.

Additionally, the steps must have high abrasion resistance and a non-slip surface.

Besides, great importance has a staircase construction cost.

Strength of the staircase

In terms of strength characteristics, wood is significantly inferior to metal. However, valuable wood species have sufficient strength required for the normal operation of the staircase.

The hardest rocks are:

  • Maple.

Of the other options, it is better to choose larch, which is stronger than pine and other soft tree species.

By the strength of the connection of individual elements, wooden structures also lose to metal. Over time, the tree dries up, the joints loosen.

Have metal ladder there is no such problem. The metal staircase design has:

  • Reliability;
  • Sustainability;
  • Rigidity.

The exception is aluminum. It is a fairly soft material, it can deform easily.

Moisture resistance of staircase elements

Exposure to moisture is equally destructive for untreated wood and ordinary steel. All wooden elements must be protected from water using special means:

  • Moisture resistant impregnation;
  • Paints;
  • Lakov.

When using wooden stairs outdoors, such protection is required. It will need to be constantly updated. For example, beech is not resistant to moisture, may deform, and larch does not rot.

Modern production technologies make it possible to produce wood-based materials that are reliably protected from the harmful effects of water. For example, wood-polymer composite.

Ordinary steel is absolutely not resistant to corrosion and requires mandatory processing. To prevent rust from reducing the strength characteristics of the metal structure, it is necessary to paint the metal with special compounds. In addition, the metal will need constant maintenance to maintain the appearance of the ladder and increase its lifespan.

Resistant to corrosion are:

  • Stainless steel;
  • Aluminum;
  • Chrome plated steel.

If the staircase structure is not assembled on welded joints, then of these types of metal, the systems can be used outdoors for a very long time.

But if welding is used, then the joints of the elements require special attention. They must be thoroughly cleaned and coated with protective compounds.

Durability

Wooden stairs can last a long time. The magnificent stairwells in many historic buildings are prime examples.

But this requires the use of valuable types of wood, which are perfectly prepared, well dried, processed with special compounds from:

  • Rotting;
  • Mold;
  • Fungi;
  • Insects;
  • Rodents.

In addition, appropriate conditions of temperature and humidity are required. In the future, the finished structure must be constantly maintained in an aesthetically pleasing form.

Exterior wooden stairs that have not been properly and properly processed quickly lose their normal appearance.

Sometimes it is no longer possible to restore it. Of metals, stainless steel has the longest life.

Regular profiled steel will last longer than wood.

But it also requires special treatment and subsequent care.

Resistance of materials to aggressive and atmospheric influences

If we compare the resistance of wood and metal in relation to aggressive and atmospheric influences, then metal structures have higher technical indicators.

The tree is very susceptible to most acids, alkalis and other adverse factors.

Fire safety staircase system

If we consider the issue of fire safety of wood and metal, then it is definitely not decided in favor of wooden structures.

Wooden staircases in the building should be located away from any possible ignition sources. Even processing them with special fire retardants does not give a complete guarantee of fire safety.

Metal structures resist high temperatures much longer. Of course they lose theirs too specifications as a result of prolonged exposure to open fire. But in the course of a fire, the metal does not emit combustion products, smoke does not occur from it.

In order to reliably protect the metal structures of the stairs, they are coated with special fire retardants and paints.

Ease of material handling and installation of the structure

Wood is much easier to work with than metal. For this reason, you can independently make a larger number of shapes, sizes, decorative elements from it.

With metal, everything is more complicated. In the factory, it is very flexible and can be performed:

  • Profile products;
  • Casting;
  • Forging.

But all these will be ready-made parts, or separate modules, from which you can assemble not so many staircase options with your own hands. As a rule, they are accompanied by instructions from the manufacturer.

Making individual designs to order immediately leads to an increase in the cost of the product. Few people will be able to independently make a forged staircase, or use a welding machine.

Environmental friendliness of the material

The naturalness of wood, its valuable properties for creating a favorable microclimate in the room are well known facts. No other material can compete with this.

Often the choice in favor of a wooden staircase in the house is made for this very reason. Wood creates a unique comfort and warmth in any room.

From an environmental point of view, there are no questions about raw wood materials. However, when various wood preservatives are used, very careful selection is required.

Environmentally friendly material - wood

Important! It is strictly forbidden to use materials intended only for external use for processing wood inside the house. They, as a rule, very reliably protect a wooden surface from various adverse effects, but they emit substances hazardous to human health.

You should select impregnations, paints and varnishes with natural ingredients. Certified products - well-known brands - deserve more trust.

The metal itself is an absolutely clean ecological material. A problem with metal stairs can be created by processing it with unsafe compounds.

Therefore, their choice should also be approached with caution.

Ease of use of the stairs

Wooden ladders are more convenient to use than metal ones. The safety of descent and ascent along non-slippery steps that isolate sounds, the pleasant naturalness of steps and railings is an indisputable advantage of wood. They do not make walking uncomfortable.

The only serious drawback is the squeak of the steps. It often occurs during operation, due to the drying out of wood or improper assembly of the structure.

The disadvantages of metal ladders during their operation include:

  • Slippery steps;
  • Low noise insulation;
  • Heating the structure in the sun and strong cooling at low temperatures.

Slippery metal steps can be a serious hazard and require more caution when navigating. If there are children in the house, then using a metal ladder becomes even more dangerous.

The noise generated during the operation of a metal staircase can be reduced by using special step coatings.

Metal tends to react strongly to temperature, which makes it unsafe to use. If the handrails are heated in the sun for a long time, they can cause burns. When the temperature environment goes into the range below zero, then the unprotected skin of the hands can also suffer from direct contact with metal.

One option to avoid this is to finish the railing with wood.

The aesthetic appeal of the staircase as a decorative element

The design issue for stairs made of wood and metal is highly individual. Someone prefers naturalness, natural beauty of wooden structures.

Others will opt for metal products.

Purely metal staircase structures cannot boast such a wide variety of options as wooden models.

Ladder construction cost

The most budgetary option from wood is a pine staircase.

For a metal staircase, the simplest construction of conventional steel profiles.

But these are very inexpensive and, accordingly, purely practical options. There is no need to talk about any aesthetics here. If you choose more design solutions, then a mostly metal staircase will cost more than a wooden one.

Yes, when using exotic woods with artistic finishing of elements, the price for an exclusive option can reach huge sums.

Which ladder is cheaper: wooden or metal - depends on the type of material, the complexity of the structure. But this choice is purely individual.

Combined staircase designs

In order to use all the advantages of materials and reduce or even eliminate their disadvantages, you can use the combined version of the stairs.

The combination of metal and wood in structures is a very common phenomenon; they complement each other perfectly.

Stairs made of metal and wood can be used both inside the building and outside.

Stairs on a metal frame

Mainly used metal-wooden stairs, which consist of:

  • Metal supporting frame;
  • Wooden steps;
  • Combined fencing.

That is, the metal acts as a more durable and reliable support option. Wood, on the other hand, gives the structure an attractive appearance and ease of use. Wooden stairs with a metal base can be made in any shape and size.

Their main advantages are:

  • Durability;
  • High strength;
  • Rigidity;
  • Stability;
  • Ease of assembly.

The cost of the combined structure is often much cheaper than the fully wooden version of the staircase.

Modern metal production technologies make it possible to create lightweight structures. They can be sheathed not only natural wood, but also with various materials based on it.

In order to reduce the cost of stairs, you can combine expensive types of wood - for elements with a high operational load, and cheap species - for products that are less subject to wear and tear.

For example, from hard wood are made:

  • Steps;
  • Supports;
  • Handrails.

You can build from pine or birch:

  • End parts of steps;
  • Frame sheathing;
  • Skirting boards;
  • Other vertical details.

Wooden steps, which are attached to the metal frame, get rid of squeakiness and can be easily replaced if necessary.

In addition, wooden steps are the safest when climbing stairs. Less chance of slipping - injury from a fall will not be significant.

It is quite simple to give a staircase on a metal frame a completely new look if you completely change all the wooden elements.

Combined staircase - photo

The metal frame can be completely covered with wood.

The structural strength will be high, and it will look aesthetically like wood.

Combined frame ladders

You can combine different options for supports and rails. For example, wooden steps are supported by one side on a wooden stringer, and the other side is attached to metal bolts. A metal fence gives the structure additional strength.

There are a lot of options for combining staircase structures made of wood and metal.

Combined stair railing

Another option is to combine the stair railing.

Cold metal railings and handrails are sheathed with wood or made entirely of wood. Support posts can be made from both materials.

Filling the internal space between them is possible from decorative metal elements.

  • For outdoor use, it is better to choose the option of a metal staircase - it is less susceptible to external atmospheric influences;
  • Indoors great combined option - the combination of strength and stability with an aesthetic component will give the user much more convenience than mono-material stairs;
  • For the device of attic transforming stairs, it is better to choose lightweight metal structures;
  • Any work ladders should be made of aluminum;
  • Completely wooden structures will definitely fit perfectly into the design of a wooden house.

Which is better: a metal or wooden staircase? Everyone approaches this issue individually. There is no definite answer, and everyone has their own choice. You can find out more about the construction of stairs made of wood and metal by watching the video in this article.

Metal is perfect for assembling a variety of staircase structures. Compared to other existing materials, it has good indicators of durability, reliability and load-bearing capacity.

From the material under consideration, it is possible to make both small-sized staircases with low weight, and solid stairs of any level of complexity and configuration. A correctly assembled metal staircase is able to organically fit into almost any interior. This design will be appropriate both inside the room and outside it.

An additional advantage is that an ordinary metal ladder can be assembled with your own hands. To do this, it is enough to study the recommendations below and do everything in accordance with the instructions.

In terms of their structural properties, internal and external metal stairs do not differ significantly from their wooden and concrete counterparts. Before starting work, you must definitely prepare a staircase project and choose the most rational form of the product.

In accordance with the manufacturing method, metal stairs are divided into welded and forged options. The skill of forging, of course, cannot be quickly mastered, but for making a simple welded staircase, a good theoretical base and a couple of practical lessons are enough. However, first you need to choose the best option for the future design.

Types of ladder structures

Among the most popular homemade stairs, you need to highlight:

Regardless of the type of staircase, it can only be supported on the floor. To further increase the overall structural reliability, additional support elements can be placed under the landings of the staircase.

You can also fix the platforms with consoles, and place the racks discreetly in the wall space.

Often, a separate load-bearing partition made of brick or concrete is erected to accommodate the stairs.

In this moment, you have to figure it out on your own, focusing on personal preferences and the recommendations obtained above.

Combination options

Metal can be combined with almost any finishing materials... It is in perfect harmony with glass, various stones, concrete, as well as wood and brick.

A homemade metal staircase can be equipped with any type of fencing: both ordinary vertical posts and unusual screens made of perforated steel and glass, carvings, hand-forged elements, prokidami, etc.

The elements of the fence can be fastened using bolts or welding to the end of the step, and they can also be installed directly on the steps.

In accordance with the owner's personal preferences, operational specifics and stylistic features, the supporting part of the metal structure can be supplemented with steps made of corrugated metal, reinforcing steel, concrete, porcelain stoneware and many other materials.

In private houses, metal stairs with wooden steps look most organically. Outside the house, the staircase can be made entirely of metal. Inside, it is desirable to sheathe the frame with another, more pleasant and familiar material.

On the steps of the stairs, you can lay facing ceramics, durable laminate, carpet and other wear-resistant materials.

DIY staircase assembly guide

There is nothing super complicated in self-assembly of a metal ladder. All you need to do is follow the instructions in everything and thoroughly think over each of your further actions.

Training

Prepare all the accessories necessary for this before starting work. First of all, you will need welding machine... Beginners are quickest to master inverter-type devices - they are the easiest to use. With relevant experience, you can use any other machine suitable for welding the metal you are using.

Also prepare a mechanical saw, a grinder and an emery wheel. If you will be making wooden steps, additionally prepare clamps, electric drill with a set of drills, self-tapping screws, circular saw.

Prepare in advance project of the future staircase. You can make it yourself, order it from a specialized company, or find suitable drawings in open sources. There are quite a few such sources, so you can easily choose the version of the ladder that is optimal for your specific situation.

Diagram of a simple metal staircase: 1 Channel. 2 Corrugated metal steps. 3 Steel filly. 4 Places of welding. 5 Brackets for fastening steps.

The simplest metal ladder will be based on a channel with dimensions 8-10 placed on the edge. If you plan on finishing the stairs, prepare your preferred material, such as wood planks or sheet metal, for this.

Outdoor stair treads are best sheathed with corrugated metal sheets or other non-slip material.

The railings will be made of angle steel. To create supports under the treads, prepare the reinforcement.

First step. Cut the reinforcement into filly. These are special support devices placed on the beam. Select the sizes and the required number of fillies in accordance with the terms of the project documentation for your staircase.

Step two. Weld the mounting brackets to the side of the filly, on which the step will "lie" in the future.

Step three.Weld the filly to the ribbed channel. Pre-prepared markup, made in accordance with the project documentation, will help you with this.

Attach the second channel to the prepared channel-beam with fillets fixed to it and correct the markings if any deviations are found.

For self-assembly of an ordinary staircase with a meter width, a pair of stringers or bowstrings is enough. If the staircase will have more impressive dimensions, equip it with three or more support beams.

Fourth step.Assemble all the elements of a homemade metal ladder into a single structure by welding.

Fifth step. Treat the metal with a primer, and after drying - with a special anti-corrosion compound.

In the end, it remains to install the assembled ladder on the supports. The support functions can be performed by columns welded from a channel of high quality, as well as metal corners attached to the support beams by welding.

If you wish, you can give preference to a more complex design of a metal ladder with a bowstring cut from thick sheet metal. Cut according to the project, as accurately and accurately as possible. Otherwise, the order of assembling the ladder will not differ from the assembly of the above design option.

After assembling and installing the structure, proceed to the sheathing of the steps.

Sheathing of steps

For finishing the steps of a metal staircase can be used various materials... In households, this is most often done with wood trims.

First step.Mark on the metal steps the location of the future holes for bolts or self-tapping screws with a step of 150 mm. The distance between the end edges of the steps and the fixing holes must be at least 20 mm.

Step two.Attach a plywood backing to the treads. Fix the element with a special adhesive, usually sold with a “filling effect” mark. This glue is remarkable in that it does not wrinkle after hardening. In addition, the filling adhesive makes it possible to eliminate various minor imperfections that inevitably appear even with the highest quality welding.

It is prohibited to use simple polyurethane foam for fixing the substrate - this material does not have the necessary resistance to crushing and very quickly deforms under the influence of mechanical loads.

Step three. Secure the wood trim to the treads with a pair of clamps, and then finally secure it through the pre-prepared mounting holes. In the case of using self-tapping screws, place them in the bottom of the chambers. If fastening with bolts, fix openly.

Cover all steps as shown above.

Thus, self-assembly of the simplest metal ladder is not difficult. Having studied the basic provisions of the instructions and learning additional nuances, you can cope with all the activities with your own hands. Improve your skills, and very soon you will be able to assemble more complex and aesthetically pleasing staircase structures of all sizes, types and configurations.

Happy work!

Video - DIY metal stairs

Everyone knows that metal is a material that makes it possible to ensure both the reliability and durability of the staircase structure. Combined wood-sheathed stairs, consisting of a metal frame and wooden elements (steps, fencing), combine excellent strength characteristics and aesthetic properties. There is no more harmonious combination of materials for creating combined staircase structures than metal and wood. Each of them brings the best to this combination. Ladders made of wood and metal are the epitome of functional appeal. Metal gives the staircase design rigor and reliability, and the wood paneling of the metal base gives warmth, inimitable beauty and naturalness.

For the metal frame, durable metals are used that are resistant to the corrosion process. The metal base, which is subsequently sheathed with wood, is made from shaped pipe ferrous metal or stainless steel. It is painted and subjected to anti-corrosion treatment to protect it from the negative effects of the external environment. Cast iron frames are sometimes used.

There are two options for metal frames: closed and open.

We manufacture combined stairs from metal and wood, using two types of support beams, depending on the wishes of the customer:

  • bowstrings serve as a support,
  • using kosour.

A staircase on a metal frame, sheathed with wood is an excellent choice for those who want to order an excellent interior staircase. We use wood of various types of trees for covering the steps. The parts covering the metal frame are made of oak, beech, ash, pine. Each of these materials has properties that influence the choice. To sheathe the metal frame, we use only high quality wood.

Ladders made of wood and metal or stairs on a metal frame with wooden steps are rightly considered one of the most popular among customers in Moscow, the Moscow region and other regions. The inner part of the metal frame sheathed with plywood, wooden steps and risers - an opportunity to combine materials to create a successful interior solution.

If you already have a metal frame or a concrete base installed in your house, then it's time to decide how best to sheathe it. It is preferable if the staircase is sheathed with wood, but sometimes it is sheathed with veneer plywood. A staircase on a metal frame, sheathed with plywood is a democratic version of a sheathed structure.

Before starting all work on the sheathing of the staircase frame, the following is necessary:

  • specify all the parameters of the metal frame: the distance between the spans, the overall dimensions of the steps, the planar ratio of the platforms. This will allow correcting the existing negative moments (difference in step sizes, sloppy welds, etc.) before or during the sheathing phase of the structure;
  • decide on the base sheathing material, decorative elements.

We sheathe metal and concrete frames with various wood, including valuable wood species. Having extensive experience in Moscow and other regions of Central Russia, the specialists of the Vladimir Stairs company are ready to offer you the manufacture and wood cladding of metal frames.

If you dream of an original, beautiful and durable staircase in your home, then you should pay attention to the combined design. It is a projected structure that combines a variety of load-bearing parts and materials. As a rule, wood of various species (beech, oak, pine, ash, etc.), metal, glass and stone are used in the production.

Many at construction two-storey house are interested in how to make a metal staircase. Metal is not the only material for making stairs, but the metal structure has stronger bearing capacity and is more durable than others. The technological qualities of metal allow you to make a lightweight product of any configuration and complexity out of it with your own hands. So, what is needed to make a staircase out of metal with your own hands and what its assembly looks like.

Types of interfloor stairs and the advantages of metal structures

According to the material of manufacture, interfloor stairs are divided into the following:

  • wooden;
  • concrete;
  • metal.

Metal stairs can fit into any type of interior country house, they can be installed both outdoors and indoors. Simple welded dIY metal ladder is easy to assemble, and after acquiring the necessary skills, you can try yourself in making something more complex.

You can make a beautiful and lightweight model from metal that will decorate your home.

The simplest design that you can do yourself using the welding method is one-march. But to make a two-flight staircase together with the platform, it will take more experience and skill.

DIY metal stairs: key requirements for the structure

By their design, products made of metal, wood or concrete do not differ from each other, the calculations and design principles will be the same. Also, the basic requirements that should be observed during construction do not differ:

  • in private houses, the width of the staircase must be at least 900 mm;
  • the slope of one march must be constant and have an optimal angle;
  • the recommended step height is about 150 mm;
  • minimum step depth - 270 mm;
  • the fence must be capable of withstanding a side load of up to 100 kg;
  • the permissible distance between the guardrails is 120 to 150 mm.

Depending on the manufacturing method metal stairs are forged and welded, but by design, they are divided into the following:

Professionals, as a rule, use a computer model to calculate the parameters of a future structure, where you can easily think over and calculate everything. But, if you take on the work with your own hands, then everything needs to be calculated manually.

Let's take as a basis the simplest design - a single-march straight staircase. Calculations for it are as follows:

  • we determine the depth and height of the steps;
  • we determine the length of the stairs, taking into account that the angle of inclination is about 30-45 degrees;
  • we calculate the number of stairs;
  • we calculate the size of the overhang of the upper step over the lower one;
  • based on all the miscalculations, we determine the amount of material required for the work.

On specialized resources and in specialized literature all equations can be found easilythat need to be applied in order to carry out the above calculations.

What will it take to work?

To get started on making a metal ladder with your own hands, prepare the following set of tools:

The work must be carried out in the following sequence:

  • cutting the workpiece;
  • manufacturing of knots for fastening steps (filly);
  • welding of reference angles;
  • installation of stringers;
  • welding of steps and fences;
  • surface cleaning;
  • priming and painting.

Take the corners and make filly out of them. Highly it is important not to make mistakes, otherwise the slightest distortions or inaccuracies can negatively affect the integrity of the entire structure. The fillies must be the same size and mirrored in relation to each other. Fillets are made from a steel corner.

Cut out the samples and butt the corners together to create an L-shaped welded corner. For the staircase, you need only 14 pairs of such nodes, where one part will act, respectively, with the right support, and the second with the left. Now weld the brackets for fastening the steps and the crossbeams between each pair, the crossbars must also be made from the corners. To increase the strength of the structure, take small kerchiefs and install them at the bottom of the step in the direction of the stringers.

Make a mark along the edge of the square shaped tube and weld the filly along the edge of the stringer. Attach the second string to the first stringer along with the welded fillets and accurately transfer the markings.

For a construction with a width of 900 mm, two stringers will be enough. Now weld the filly to the second stringer and check everything with the level. Next, you need to weld the stringers with the lower part to the support. If your house has a concrete base, then the support part can be installed directly in the concrete, and we attach the upper part of the stringer to the support post, which is attached to the floor between the floors using steel anchors. After that, check everything with the level.

If you chose the wall-mounted version of the ladder, then in order to make it stiffer, weld one of the stringers to the brackets on the wall.

It remains to weld the steps to the filly or fix them with bolts, but then you need wood paneling... You can also put wooden steps on the filly by means of a screw connection.

The upper step should be installed at a minimum distance from the wall so that the wallpaper sheet passes between the step and the wall. The railing on the side of the ladder must be welded in such a way that this does not reduce its width.

Then you need to clean up the welds so that burrs, seams and notches are not visible. Sweep away metal residues with a special brush, cover the surface with a primer and paint in the desired color. Wooden steps should only be installed after the paint has dried.

The entire decoration process, including the plating process, is appropriate to carry out at the stage of finishing.

If you have made the ladder frame reliable and durable, it can be further decorated later using materials such as:

  • tree;
  • ceramics;
  • fencing parts made of stainless steel;
  • other materials.

Thus, you will add zest to even the most ordinary-looking staircase.

In addition to this type of ladder, you can do it yourself cantilever ladders without inclined supports, where some steps are attached to the wall with one end using bolts or by supporting on special pins. However, it will be extremely difficult to make a cantilever structure, like a screw one, without special training.

If you don't want to clutter up the room with metal, then choose a glass staircase, the design of which is always a win-win and fits into any type of interior.

From the outside, it may seem that building a metal staircase is a simple job. This is partly true, but you need to be extremely careful and accurate, perform welding work with high quality and take your time when installing the structure. Choosing the option of building a metal staircase with your own hands, you will also save significant funds that can be spent on other repair work and interior decoration.
